Choosing e-learning media…that’s it https://ctxbay.com/choosing-e-learning-media-thats-it/ Fri, 13 May 2022 10:06:05 +0000 https://ctxbay.com/choosing-e-learning-media-thats-it/ In the previous edition of Training Tips for Ships, we discussed choosing media for learning materials and which materials would lead to the best results. In the previous edition of Training Tips for Ships, we discussed choosing media for learning materials and which materials would lead to the best results. Is it text? Pictures? Videos? Interactive exercises and simulations? Too often it is claimed that interactive media with fancy (and expensive) graphics will produce better learning outcomes. The reality is not so simple. So how do we choose? It’s not hard.

The first question we should ask ourselves is not about choice of media, but rather about learning outcomes. Do we want the trainee to internalize a knowledge or a concept? Or is it skills or reasoning that we hope to impart? These are very different learning goals and different types of media will support some goals better than others. Let’s examine them in a little more detail.
There are many ways to categorize learning objectives, but for our purposes I have divided them into four simple categories:

  1. Assimilation of knowledge. Here we just have some information that the trainee should know. For example – what is the draft of the ship?
  2. Understand a concept. Here we are trying to teach how something works. It goes beyond a list of facts to understand how, for example, a piece of equipment works.
  3. Being able to perform a task. Here we are trying to teach the ability to do something, safely and effectively. Examples might be launching a lifeboat or taking a sounding.
  4. Being able to reason and make decisions. Here, we prepare the trainee to make decisions and perform actions in response to new situations.

Given any training we want to do, we must first decide which of these categories the training fits into. Let’s take the example of putting on a fireproof suit. Which of the above statements applies here? Although it can be argued that teaching this skill requires the achievement of all four learning objectives, they are not assessed equally. In this case:

  • There is a reasonable amount of knowledge to learn – what the components of the fire suit are, where they are stored, how they fit together, etc.
  • There’s a bit of conceptual knowledge required – like how the suit protects against heat.
  • The ability to perform the task (put on the suit) is essential, arguably of equal importance to knowing the components of the fire suit.
  • And finally, being able to reason is not a big requirement for putting on a fire suit. This is because there may be issues encountered when donning or using a suit that require some reasoning to resolve, but are unlikely to be the primary desired outcome.

Looking above, it seems that the main learning objectives for donning a fire suit can be safely considered to be “knowledge assimilation” and “task execution”. You can use the same process to get a general idea of the main learning objectives for any skill.

Once we understand these learning outcomes, the task of matching media to outcomes is relatively simple if we understand the strengths and limitations of each. In fact, said a little differently, for each of these learning outcomes there are teaching methods (or pedagogies as it is properly called) that will have strengths or limitations in achieving the desired outcomes, and in In many cases, the choice of media is a direct result of the chosen pedagogy.

But for our purposes, we’ll simplify a bit and look at how media choices map to desired learning outcomes. This will be the subject of the next edition of Training Tips for Ships.

Until then, thank you for reading and surfing safely!

Modern teaching is no longer confined to classrooms, the blackboard or the greenboard. In recent times, education in schools in Haryana is being delivered through digital platforms. Students also learned a new way to study online.

While realizing the importance of online education, the e-Aahigam program was implemented by the state government.

Under the program, 500,000 public school students will receive tablets equipped with 2GB of free data and personalized adaptive learning (PAL) software.

This will not only boost the morale of public school children who are studying, but will also save on education, tuition, coaching and book expenses incurred by their parents.

An official spokesperson said on Tuesday that the state government aims to bring about a paradigm shift in the education sector. While constantly emphasizing online learning, several programs are run by the state government.

Taking this e-learning campaign one step further, the government will now provide free tablets to students. Through this e-Aahigam program, students will have the opportunity to learn not only from their teachers, but also from teachers around the world.

This e-learning via tablets will help students engage in research projects.

The spokesperson said that in the first phase of the program, 500,000 students in Classes X and XII would receive tablets.

Most of the students in public schools in Haryana are from lower middle class or disadvantaged sections. Sometimes, due to the lack of excess digital resources, students have to suffer academically, but with the implementation of this e-Aahigam program, the lives of students would be transformed in a big way.

Now academic competition will be equal and the digital learning gap between rich and poor will end.

The e-Aahigam program is expected to increase not only the fainting percentage, but also the percentage of grades achieved.

Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar will launch the program on May 5 to provide tablets to students studying in public schools. The tablet distribution ceremony will be held in Rohtak.

During this time, the tablets will be given to public school students in the city of Rohtak. This tablet distribution function will also start simultaneously in 119 blocks in the state.

In other districts, ministers, deputies, deputies and other guests will distribute tablets.

According to the latest report from the IMARC group “Saudi Arabia E-Learning Market: Industry Trends, Share, Size, Growth, Opportunities and Forecast 2021-2026“The online learning market in Saudi Arabia is currently experiencing robust growth. Due to these factors, the market is expected to continue its robust growth over the forecast period (2021-2026).

E-learning is the means of learning and training using digital resources. It is delivered through electronic devices, such as internet-connected computers, tablets and mobile phones. Online learning encourages the healthy exchange of knowledge in an interactive atmosphere and helps deliver education regardless of time and place. E-learning is often seen as a cost-effective alternative to the traditional mode of knowledge dissemination and helps facilitate the changing prerequisites for quality education.

Market trends:

One of the major drivers of market growth is increasing spending and reform initiatives in the education sector by the Ministry of Education of Saudi Arabia. This can be attributed to the government’s focus on closing the education gap and improving the quality of education across the country. In addition, the multiplication of collaborations between the various governmental and private players to promote the adoption of online learning solutions acts as a major growth factor. The market is also driven by the significant rise in participation rates of female learners with domestic obligations, who prefer e-learning services to physical classroom setups. Other factors such as increasing disposable incomes, willingness to spend on education, and growing internet and smartphone penetration are creating more positive outlook for the market.

Go1 CEO Andrew Barnes talks about the future of e-learning subscriptions https://ctxbay.com/go1-ceo-andrew-barnes-talks-about-the-future-of-e-learning-subscriptions/ Thu, 28 Apr 2022 13:00:15 +0000 https://ctxbay.com/go1-ceo-andrew-barnes-talks-about-the-future-of-e-learning-subscriptions/ Welcome back to our Workplace newsletter. Welcome back to our Workplace newsletter. Just got back from our first company retreat, which we jokingly made up Protocol IRLFest. It was my first time meeting many of my IRL colleagues, including my own editor, Meg Morrone! I remembered a song I wrote some time ago the (kind of) return of business trips, which takes on a different form in a post-COVID world. Even a few days with all your colleagues makes all the difference when it comes to boosting morale, creating a sense of belonging and developing overall strategy and ideas. All of this is still quite difficult to do on Zoom.

Today, my colleague Amber Burton interviews an edtech CEO about why companies invest in learning subscriptions for their employees, and Issie Lapowsky looks at the responsibilities of rideshare companies when it comes to employee safety.

— Michelle Ma, journalist (E-mail | Twitter)

Choose your own adventure

When I think of subscriptions, I immediately think of my Netflix subscription and my Amazon Prime subscription, oh, and that HBO Max subscription that I never canceled after watching the last season of “Succession.” I’m sure you understand where I’m coming from: I’ve accumulated a lot of subs. And I’m not the only one. HR managers have been stocking up on learning and development subscriptions to give employees an edge (and hopefully entice them to stick around a bit longer).

Someone who has noticed this shift is Andrew Barnes, CEO and co-founder of Go1, an education technology subscription company that provides custom libraries of course options for businesses around the world. Go1 does not charge per course, but rather offers companies a way to create custom libraries of learning subscriptions. The subscription service provides access to over 100,000 courses and services ranging from Pluralsight to Blinkist, the book digest subscription service. Like many other educational technology companies, Go1 realized that L&D is now about allowing employees to choose their own adventures.

“The data that we’re seeing is really interesting, because an organization will subscribe for their staff, and that staff member can access a wellness course or a leadership course or a Pluralsight course or whatever of the same way that you sort of think about subscribing to Spotify,” Barnes said. “You don’t need payment per genre of song you’re accessing. When we look at it, individuals often chart their own path as to what’s important to them, as opposed to some sort of top-down approach.

Barnes considers the top-down approach HR managers used to take to training and development a thing of the past. Employees now prefer to choose the enrichment courses that they believe can best advance their personal lives and careers rather than waiting for a list of courses approved by their employer.

Go1 gave us some insight into what employees and employers are most interested in when it comes to subscriptions.

What types of learning subscriptions are most popular among tech companies:

  • Courses related to top cloud providers, as well as courses related to leadership and communication skills.
  • Barnes shared that in the North American market, Go1 has also seen an increasing focus on wellness-related content.

Fastest growing subscription content vertical at Go1:

  • Subscriptions focused on personal development are growing just as quickly as professional subscriptions. Barnes shared in an email with Protocol that organizations are really focused on providing their employees with content that meets both their personal and professional needs. Due to growing demand, Go1 has added content around project management and improving communication, as well as productivity.
  • Barnes said there’s also interest in classes that help develop the soft skills that make a person a better leader or teammate.

Top reasons companies invest in non-job related courses:

  • Retention, Retention, Retention: “We’ve seen organizations increasingly focus on what it takes to attract and retain quality employees. We’re no longer in an era where office snacks are the beginning and end of what companies do to invest in their teams. Organizations need to look for innovative resources that allow employees to grow in their role and how they can apply those learnings to their next job, whether it’s within the company. »

And it’s not just about keeping employees engaged. The focus is on the engagement and support of the HR and training and development teams.

  • Content specific to human resources and training and development is currently trending on Go1, as the platform offers more courses on the future of work, the big quit and how to retain talent. “Organizations can see what other organizations are doing, how they’ve succeeded and where they’ve struggled, and can take that knowledge and refine it to make it work for them. Now more than ever, companies need to have conversations about what their employees expect of them and how they can help them achieve their goals,” he said.

Many of my protocol colleagues flew out for our company retreat this week, so I thought this AirPods travel hack from CNN Underscored would be appropriate. AirFly lets you connect Bluetooth AirPods to TV screens on an airplane that only have headphone jacks.

“Why didn’t Lyft do anything?”

A Lyft driver, Kristian Philpotts, was killed on the job, and now his mother, Marla Rice, is calling on the company to beef up its safety features and do more for the victims and their families. Rice spoke to my colleague Issie Lapowsky about what happened to her son: “I want Lyft to pull itself together…There are so many things that have gone wrong. Lyft told Protocol that it is working hard to develop safety features to keep drivers safe, including texting, partnering with ADT and establishing a 24/7 safety team. /7. Lyft isn’t the only one with security issues. Gig Workers Rising revealed that more than 50 gig workers have been killed on the job since 2017, not counting those who died in traffic accidents. The majority were Lyft and Uber drivers.
